River Trent: Hazelford (Upper Weir)
The Hazelford stretch is a connoisseur’s water, offering 15 pegs of classic river fishing in a truly stunning setting. Renowned for its traditional float fishing and hard-fighting weir-pool residents, this fishery provides a varied challenge for both match and pleasure anglers.
The Fishing: Silverfish & Specimens
This stretch is famous for its "proper" river sport, catering to those who love the art of the float and the power of the feeder:
-
The Silverfish Stronghold: Hazelford is noted for its quality Roach. It is a premier venue for the stick float, where a rhythmic loose-feeding approach with maggots or hemp can result in a net of stunning, red-finned river fish.
-
The Power Players: If you prefer the tip, the stretch holds large Bream and Barbel. As you get closer to the weir, the water becomes increasingly oxygenated—perfect conditions for barbel to thrive.
-
Tactics: While the stick float is king for silvers, a sturdy feeder setup is essential when targeting the larger residents in the stronger flows.
Fishery Boundaries & Access
It is vital to observe the Federation’s boundaries on this stretch to respect local landowners:
-
The Limits: Federation water begins at the end of the first meadow and extends downstream to 100 yards above Hazelford Weir.
-
Strict No-Fishing Zone: The Federation does NOT hold the fishing rights for the first meadow. Please do not cast in or set up camp until you have reached the official Federation boundary.
-
Availability: Day tickets are available for non-members.
-
Closed Season: This stretch is subject to the statutory closed season (March 15th to June 15th inclusive).

Site Etiquette & Tips
-
Parking: While parking is available on both sides of the road, please ensure you do not block access for residents, farm machinery, or emergency vehicles.
-
Gate Security: Always ensure the five-bar gate is securely closed after you pass through to prevent livestock from escaping.
-
The Walk: It is a short walk from the road to the first pegs, so a lightweight trolley can be helpful if you are carrying a full match kit or heavy feeder gear.
[!NOTE] A Classic Stretch: This area is steeped in Nottingham angling history. By keeping the site clean and respecting the boundaries, you help us maintain access to one of the most famous roach and barbel reaches on the middle Trent.
