The Nottingham Canal: A Prime Stretch for Every Angler
The Nottingham Canal serves as a vital artery for both river traffic and wildlife, allowing boats to bypass the shallows of Clifton Bridge and the formidable Beeston Weir. Because it is connected at both ends to the River Trent, the canal functions as a rich "living bypass," hosting nearly every species found in the main river.
What’s on the Hook?
While the canal is a stronghold for traditional silverfish sport, it holds a few heavy-hitting surprises for those with the right gear:
-
Bread & Butter: Prolific stocks of Roach and Bream dominate the weights.
-
The Specialists: Large, nomadic Chub frequently patrol the walls.
-
The Giants: For the patient specimen hunter, "special" Carp reaching up to 32lb are known to frequent the London Road section.
Accessibility & Waters
The Federation proudly controls both banks of the canal, containing 238 pegs, starting from the Chain Bridge at Dunkirk and stretching all the way downstream to its confluence with the River Trent.
-
Inclusive Angling: Thanks to well-maintained towpaths and multiple access points, large sections of this canal are perfect for anglers with limited mobility.
-
The "Red Cow" Length (Lenton): This is our premier recommendation for disabled or infirm anglers. It offers easy-access pegs without sacrificing the quality of the fishing.
