Radcliffe Viaducts: The Finger Ponds

Located just behind the National Water Sports Centre, the Finger Ponds (Radcliffe Viaducts) are a standout destination for stillwater enthusiasts. While the adjacent River Trent offers fast-paced action, these ponds provide a more controlled, tranquil environment with the potential for massive hauls.

The Nottingham Federation controls all the ponds situated to the right of the access road.

What to Expect: Species & Specimens

These waters are famed for their quality and size, making them a favorite for local specimen hunters:

  • The Famous Bream: The bream fishing here is exceptional. These aren't just skimmers—the "slabs" in these ponds grow to impressive sizes and are known to show up in large numbers.

  • Tench & Carp: The ponds hold a healthy population of hard-fighting Tench and specimen Carp, providing a steady challenge throughout the warmer months.

  • Mixed Bag: Expect plenty of Roach and Rudd to keep the float dipping between the larger arrivals.

Access & The "Finger" Layout

The "Finger Ponds" get their name from their unique, elongated shape, originally formed as part of the gravel workings in the area.

  • The Federation Ponds: We control all ponds on the right-hand side of the track.

  • Important Note: The ponds to the left of the access road are strictly Carp Syndicate waters and are not open to Federation members or day ticket holders.

  • The Track: The access road leads you past the ponds toward the river. Please pass through the gate and ensure it is kept locked at all times to maintain security.

Essential Information

  • Day Tickets: This is a day ticket water, allowing non-members to experience the sport.

  • Key Required: While it is a day ticket water, a key is required for vehicle access through the gate. Keys are typically available through the Federation or local tackle shops.

  • Pro Tip: Because the ponds are relatively sheltered compared to the open river, they are an excellent "fallback" option on days when the Trent is running too high or fast to fish comfortably.

Finding Your Way: The Radcliffe Viaducts & Finger Ponds

The Finger Ponds (Radcliffe Viaducts) offer a secluded escape just minutes away from the hustle of the National Water Sports Centre. To ensure you reach the Federation-controlled side of the water safely and legally, please follow these directions:

Step-by-Step Directions

  1. The Approach: From the A6011 Radcliffe Road, turn onto Regatta Way, following signs for the National Water Sports Centre.

  2. The Turn-Off: Continue past the main entrance of the Water Sports Centre and take the first left, clearly signposted as the "Ski Pull."

  3. The Access Road: Follow this road as it passes the first pond on your right. When you reach the bottom, bear right until you see a gravel track leading off to the right.

  4. The Gate: Enter this track through the security gate.

    • Important: This gate must be kept locked at all times. You will need a Federation key to pass through.

  5. The Final Stretch: Follow this track toward the river. You have arrived!

Parking & Environment

  • Parking: Please park responsibly along the track, ensuring you do not block access for other anglers or emergency vehicles.

  • Litter: This is a sensitive wildlife area. Take all litter home with you. Any angler found leaving mess risks their membership and a permanent ban from the site.

[!TIP] Key Tip: If you don't already have one, Federation keys can be purchased from most local tackle shops in the Nottingham area. It’s a small investment for access to some of the quietest and most productive "slabs" in the region!
