River Trent: Carlton-on-Trent (Tidal)

Experience the raw power and shifting dynamics of the Tidal Trent at Carlton. This 20-peg stretch is a premier destination for anglers who enjoy the challenge of a moving tide and the heavy nets of fish that come with it.

The Federation-controlled water commences 550 yards upstream of the beck, offering a wilder, more powerful river experience than the non-tidal reaches.

The Fishing: Heavy Feeders & Big Nets

Because this stretch is tidal, the fish are nomadic and hard-fighting. Success here depends on timing and gear choice:

  • The Bream Shoals: Carlton is a noted Bream hotspot. Massive shoals of slabs move through with the tide, and once you get them feeding, the action can be frantic.

  • Barbel Power: The tidal flow brings plenty of oxygen and food, attracting large, powerful Barbel that require robust tackle to land.

  • Primary Tactic: This is primarily a feeder venue. You will need a range of lead weights to hold the bottom as the tide ebbs and flows. A heavy groundbait feeder approach with plenty of particles is the standard for building a big weight.

Site Rules & Safety

  • Tidal Awareness: Because this is a tidal stretch, the water level can rise significantly and quickly. Do not leave tackle or bait bags near the water's edge unattended, especially if the tide is coming in.

  • Litter & Noise: Please keep noise to a minimum while walking through the village and past the church. As always, take all litter home with you.

  • Livestock: You will be crossing grazing fields; ensure all gates are closed securely behind you.

[!TIP] Travel Light: Since there is a walk across two fields involved, a lightweight fishing trolley or barrow is highly recommended. It makes transporting your heavy tidal feeder gear much easier!
