FINAL ROUND OF THE WINTER LEAGUE.

The final round of this seasons Federation Winter League was fished on Sunday March 15th on the London Road Match Length of the Nottingham Canal, conditions were not ideal wit a gusting South Westerly wind blowing upstream and slightly in at all the field add to that the rain which lasted the best part of the match so conditions were not playing ball either. On the plus side though some of the better Roach which frequent the canal which were absent in last weeks fifth round match showed up.

One Angler who took advantage was match winner Simon Harper [Midland AS] drawing the downstream end peg below the County Road Bridge fishing Caster on several lines from a top three to ten metre’s he took a fine net of Roach & Perch to finish up with 11 lbs – 0-2 ozs.

Second place went to Stu McLellan who fished Maggot from a favoured peg in the Bay above the County Road Bridge he put a fine net of mainly Roach together weighing 9 lbs – 06 ozs.

Third place went to Match Organiser Gary Smith [Midland AS] who drew the same peg as he fished in Round 5 fishing his favoured  maggot bait, taking a net of Roach & Perch to the scales weighing 8 lbs – 14 ozs.

4] Clive Williams    [Midland AS]         7 lbs – 05 ozs.

5] George Elliott    [Notts Castle AC]  4lbs - 09 ozs.

6] Pete Tomlinson [Midland AS]         4 lbs– 06 ozs.

I would just like to say thanks to all those Anglers who once again fished the League despite a few cancellations due to the weather we eventually managed to finish the series, a special thankyou to Gary Smith the League Organiser for the sterling job he makes of it, finally we hope to see you all again next season, when yo will be more than welcome to bring a friend along.

ROUND 5 OF THE WINTER LEAGUE

Yesterday saw the weather delayed Round Five of the Winter League finally fished after being called off twice due to weather conditions making it nigh on impossible to fish. The conditions yesterday whilst not perfect were much more favourable, with a gusting wind and squally showers all day , the canal was carrying a small amount of colour which was dropping out all day the wind was up stream and in at you most of the time, the water temperature as you would expect was cold and with all the gritters out and about there was salt in the water to. The fis h were in pockets up and down the match length and most of the field spent a lot of time pulling their hair out whilst waiting for some fish to show in the peg.

One angler who struggled for the first hour & a half was Stu McLellan [ Notts Castle A.  C.] who drew the down stream end peg below the County Road Bridge after a slow start caught steadily all match on maggot baits on several lines, but his short line was probably his most productive. He took a fine net of Roach and Perch to the scales for 9lbs – 02 ozs. Second place was secured by Simon Harper [

Midland A. S.] who drew a peg on the Willows Section just above te old Cowies Road Bridge, he fished both Maggot & Caster baits on several lines taking both Roach & Perch including a Perch of 2 lbs 8 ozs., in a net weighing 7 lbs – 3 ozs.Third place was secured by the League leader, John Simpson [ Midland A. S.] he drew the upstream end peg and fishing maggot baits caught Roach & Perch to finish with a weight of 6 lbs – 9ozs.

4] Clive Williams    [Midland A. S. }  5 lbs –  09 ozs.

5] Pete Tomlinson [Midland A. S.]    5 lbs –0 5 ozs.

6] Gary Smith        [ Midland A. S.]    5 lbs – oo ozs.

With one match to fish which will be fished next Sunday with an 8 am Draw at the Navigation Pub Meadow Lane, all Pools & final position pay out taking in place in the Pub after the match, the League to date top six is as follows, showing points only, any tie on points will be decided on the weight caught over the series, with each Angler allowed to drop his worst performance.

                                                   THE LEAGUE TO DATE.

1]   JOHN SIMPSON            [MIDLAND A. S.]              8 POINTS.

2]   STU McLELLAN             [NOTTS CASTLE A. C.]   11 POINTS.

FOURTH ROUND OF THE WINTER LEAGUE

Apologies for the late mail, please find the results of Round Four of the Federation Winter League fished on Sunday Feb, 2nd. The conditions looked to be quite favourable with the wind blowing slightly upstream & in at most of the field, the colour despite all the overnight rain was slowly dropping out all through the match, the water temperature was slightly lower than normal due in part to the overnight rain & the recent cooler weather, definitely played its part in a set of lower weights on the day.

Taking the honours on the day was John Simpson [Midland A.S.] who drew a peg just down stream of the County Road Bridge, fishing Bread Punch, Maggot & Pinkie on the hook put together a fine net of Roach & Perch weighing 12lbs – 5ozs.

Midland Club mate Simon Harper took second place fishing similar baits caught Roach & Perch from a peg on the Tins Section weighing in at 6lbs – 7ozs.

Third place was taken by Match Organizer Gary Smith [Midland A.S.] from a peg on the Willows Section, fishing maggot hook baits also caught Roach & Perch to finish up weighing 5lbs – 5ozs.

4] Pete Tomlinson  [Midland A.S.]   3lbs –3ozs.

5] Clive Williams   [Midland A.S.]    3lbs – 2ozs.

6] Chris Shaw        [ midland A.S.]    2lbs – 11ozs.

Although the weights were down on the previous results this series for a Canal at this time of the year they are pretty good considering the recent weather conditions  we have been subjected too. Once again Midland A.S. stole the top six places.

Round Five is to be fished on Sunday February 16th with an 8 am Draw at the Navigation Pub Meadow Lane.

THIRD ROUND OF THE WINTER LEAGUE.

The Third Round of the Winter League was fished yesterday December 8th. on the London Road Match Length of the Nottingham Canal, Despite the over night rain following on from Thursdays down pour the canal, whilst carrying a brown tinge & an upstream gusty cold wind blowing in at most of the field was in fine form. There were some nice nets of fish caught from all over the length with 6 pounds being needed to secure a section win, the total overall weight averaged out at 7 pounds a man excellent return for the recent weather.

First on the day from a Peg he drew in a Club match last Sunday just down from the County Road Bridge was Stu McLellan [Notts Castle A.C.] feeding Casters & Ground Bait & alternating between Maggot & Caster hook baits he put together a fine net of Roach, Perch & Skimmers weighing in at 15 lbs --0 ozs.

Second Place was secured by John Simpson [Midland A.S.] from a peg on the Willows Section above the Cowies Road Bridge, feeding Casters & alternating between Maggot & Caster hook baits he caught Roach & Perch steadily to weigh in 10 lbs --12 ozs.

Third Place was secured by the Hemp Master Simon Harper [ Midland A.S.] who took a fine net of Roach off the Tins Section weighing 8 lbs --2 ozs.

4] Pete Tomlinson [Midland A.S.] 6 lbs --07 ozs.

5] Chris Shaw [Midland A.S.] 6 lbs -- 06 ozs.

6] Clive Williams [Midland A.S.] 6 lbs -- 00 ozs.

The lowest weight on the day was 2 pounds, but the rest of the strong field battled it out for the remaining points on offer with various weights of 5 pounds, those of you who did not Book in for this League have missed a great chance to fish a section the Nottingham Canal that always produces some great weights consistently.

SECOND ROUND WINTER LEAGUE SUNDAY NOVEMBER 17th.

The second Round of the Winter League was fished yesterday on the London Road Match Length of the canal in horrendous conditions, once again the forecasters had it wrong. The canal was pulling hard chocolate in colour rand once again full of canoeists, why can't they practice on the Rower when the Trent is up, all they do is abuse the anglers as they paddle across the width of the canal in both directions as if they own the canal arrogance at its highest, we are all sportsmen, the canal is for all to share Paddlers show a little Respect.

Despite the chocolate colour and pulling hard for the conditions the canal fished fairly well no dry nets and all anglers too at least 1 1/2 lbs to the scales.

First on the day was Clive "The Caster Master Master"Williams, [Midland A.S.] drawn at a peg on the upstream end of the Tins length Clive put together a nice net of Roach & Perch weighing 7lbs -- 11 ozs.

Second Place was taken by Club Mate Chris Shaw who drew a favoured peg in the Bay once again after trying Punch switched to Caster to take an all Roach net weighing 6lbs -- 12ozs.

Third Place was taken by Stu McLellan "Notts Castle A.C.", also drawn in the Bay, who also fished Caster taking a nice net of Roach & Skimmers for 5lbs -- 13ozs.

4] Gary Smith [Midland A.S.] 5lbs -- 9ozs.

5] John Simpson [ Midland A.S.] 4lbs -- 10ozs.

5] Ian Mac [ Midland A.S.] 4lbs -- 10ozs.

A decent set of results on the day bearing in mind the conditions with most of the top six loosing big Bream on the day, just remains now to get the kit dried out.

Round Three is on Sunday December 8th with an 8 am Draw at the Navigation Pub, Meadow Lane, Please check on our Face Book Page should we get some more bad weather that may put the Match in danger of being moved to an alternate date Gents, as I will post the details on this Board,

FIRST ROUND RESULT OF THE 2019 WINTER LEAGUE.

The first round of the Canal Winter league was fished on the London Road Match Length of the Nottingham Canal on Sunday November 3rd, despite the recent copious amounts of rain the results were very encouraging, whilst they did reach the heights of last seasons first round they were good. The canal was carrying a slight tinge of colour and was pulling through steadily, there was a lack of boat movement due to the River carrying extra water still. The only problem on the day was caused by the ignorance of the local Canoe Club who fail to respect that the canal is there for all water users and not just themselves as they chose to use the whole width of the canal to paddle in both directions, still they do say I believe" that ignorance is bliss ". onto the results.

First on the day was Match Organizer Gary Smith,[ Midland A.S.] drawn at the top of the Tins Length, Gary fished Maggot taking small Roach & Perch to finish with a fine weight on the day of 9 lbs --06 ozs.

In second place was Club mate John Simpson who fished Pinkies over Ground Bait taking an all Roach net of 8 lbs--06 ozs.

Third place was secured by Club mate, Canal & Caster Master Clive Williams fishing Caster to take an all Roach net weighing 7 lbs--11 ozs to the Scales.

4] Stu McLellan [Nott's Castle A.C.] 7 lbs --08 ozs.

5] Lew Nightingale [ Midland A.S.] 6 lbs--15 ozs .

6] Simon Harper [ Nott's Castle A.C.] 6 lbs--13 ozs.

The next Match in the series, Round Two is on Sunday November 17th with an 8 am Draw at the Navigation, Meadow Lane. Further Information can be obtained from Mr Gary Smith on 0115 7832076.

SENIOR CITIZENS MATCH PORTLAND WATERS OLD WOOD LAKE WEDNESDAY JULY 31st 2019.

The match was not fished in the greatest of conditions for the eighteen Senior Fed Members who booked in for the years event, with wind gust approaching 30 mph, and rain to greet the start of the match and typically again at the finish for the weigh in. Old Wood Lake has been reduced in size and restocked with carp up to 3lbs, Small Tench & Barble.

The winner on the day was Midland A.S. member John Rick fishing Maggot over Hemp short from peg 6 for a fine net of fish weighing 115 lbs - 12 ozs.

Second place was taken by another Midland A.S. member Gary Smith also fishing maggot from peg 11 weighing

67 .lbs - 04 ozs.

Third place was taken by Dave Briggs another Midland A.S.member from peg 19 fishing maggot weighing in

67 lbs - 01 ozs.

RESULTS OF ROUND SIX OF THE WINTER LEAGUE.

The final round of this seasons League was fished on Sunday March 17th on the London Road match Length, and despite the appalling wind which at times came from all directions, add to that the Sleet and Snow showers and all in all it was not ideal conditions, the weights were excellent with fish being taken from all over the match length which was pleasing after the amount of rain and gale type conditions we have received in the area this week.

Taking the Honours on the day was Coalville based Simon Harper, who drew a peg just down stream of the County Road Bridge, fishing Bread Punch at 8 metres and Hemp short Simon put a fine net of Roach together weighing in at 10 lbs - 14 ozs.

Second place was taken by Ian Foulds who drew the end upstream peg in the Bay above the County Road Bridge, fishing Pinkies he caught steadily all match Roach and Perch to finish with 10 lbs - 03 ozs

Third place was taken by Stu McLellan who drew the upstream end peg for the third time in the series and after a terrible first three hours which produced a Pike of around 10 lbs [which was witnessed] he had little to show for his efforts, a switch to Hemp paid dividends which saw him finish with 8lbs - 13 ozs of mainly Roach.

There were no dry nets on the day and to finish the series with a good set of results on the day which augers well for Clubs who have booked on the water and Pleasure Anglers too.

WINTER LEAGUE ROUND 5

Federation Winter League Match Report for Round Five Sunday February 17th 2019. Despite an improvement in the weather conditions the Canal was in a mean mood for the latest round of the League, it was running clearer and there was a noticeable drop in the Water Temperature, the brighter sunnier conditions also did not help  on the day, causing the fish to shoal up in certain areas.

First on the day was Match Organiser Gary Smith [ Midland A.S. ] who took 6lbs – 14ozs to the scales from a  peg at the upstream end of the Tins Section, Gary caught two Perch for 5 lbs, plus some Roach on Maggot.

FOURTH ROUND OF THE FEDERATION WINTER LEAGUE.

Round four of the League was fished today Sunday February 3rd on the London Road Match Length. The conditions were not ideal with a strong cold south westerly wind bowing up & in up the whole match length. There was a distinct lack of colour in the water, the water temperature was typically arctic causing the fish to shoal up in pockets over the match length.

Taking the Honours on the day was Clive Wiliams,
[ Midland A.S. ] from the end upstream peg on the Narrows, fishing Punch & Caster Baits, Clive put together a fine net of Roach weighing 11 ibs - 4 ozs.

THIRD ROUND OF THE WINTER LEAGUE.

Sunday December 9th was Round Three of the Winter League fished on the London Road match length. Once again the weather has been kind us despite the mid week rain there has been no frosts just strong gusting winds which hampered presentation at times. There was a slight tinge of colour which dropped out as the match progressed, a drop in the water temperature which meant a drop in the weights overall. If you managed to draw in a favoured area there were fish to be caught, whilst there were no dry nets most anglers found it difficult to keep a steady flow of fish through the match.

First on the day was Chris Shaw [Midland A.S.] who drew a peg which has started to produce some good weights in the Bay above the County Road Bridge , fishing mainly caster he caught a fine net of Roach & Perch to finish with 9lbs - 3ozs.

Second place was taken by Simon Harper [Nott's Castle A.C.] also drawn in the Bay just below Chris fishing caster & hemp hook baits also caught Roach & Perch to finish just shy of first place with 8lbs - 15ozs,

Third place was secured by Rob Sherriff [Midland A.S.] who despite loosing 3 sections of pole during one of the strong gusts put together a nice net of Roach taken on caster from a peg just above the Meadow Lane Hump Back Bridge.

4] Gary Smith [Midland A.S.] 6lbs -10 1/2ozs.

5] Stu McLellan [Nott's Castle A.C.] 6lbs - 8 1/2ozs.

Round 4 of the Winter League Sunday February 4th with an 8am Draw at the Navigation Meadow Lane, all Pools paid out in the Pub after the Match.

SECOND ROUND RESULT OF THE WINTER LEAGUE 18/11/18

Sunday November 18th was Round Two of the Federation Winter League on the Nottingham Beeston Canal, once again the weather had been kind to us no overnight frost but the canal was running clearer than for Round One which is indicated by a slight drop in the weights. The forecasted strong North Easterly wind did not appear as the forecast predicted it would be very gusty which was good news for all the field as it can make certain pegs very tricky to present the bait.

First on the day was Match Organiser Gary Smith [Midland A.S.] who drew a favoured peg on the Narrows that came in second on Round One fishing Caster & Maggot baits he caught steadily all  match taking Roach & Perch to weigh in 12lb – 10oz.

Second place was secured by Pete Tomlinson [Midland A.S.] who drew a peg in the Narrows fishing Bread Punch & Maggot baits caught Roach & Skimmers steadily to finish with 7lb – 10oz.

Third place was secured by the Reigning Champion John Simpson [Midland A.S.] who drew in the Bay above the County Road Bridge once again fishing Caster & Maggot caught mainly Perch from a peg that does not often feature in the results weighing in 7lb – 5oz.

Round Three of the Winter League is on Sunday December 9th with an 8 am Draw at the Navigation Pub, by Notts County Football Ground, all Pools paid out in the Pub after the match.

FIRST ROUND RESULT OF THE WINTER LEAGUE. 4/11/18

The first round of the Fed, Winter League was fished on the London Road Match length of the canal on Sunday November 4th, over the last couple of weeks the canal has suffered from the drop in temperatures but for the first round match it had its Sunday Best Hat on, producing some good weights from all over the length, which was a bonus for Match Organiser Gary Smith who had a few sleepless nights leading up to the match thinking weights would be well down. Any fears he had were displaced as the Weigh Boards came in.

First on the day was Stu McLellan [ Nott's Castle A.C. ] who drew a favoured peg in the Bay above County Road Bridge, recently the peg has not produced its best, however feeding caster & hemp Stu finished up with a fine net of Roach & Perch weighing 17 lbs - 12 ozs taken down the peg on single & double caster with a few fish on Pinkie late in the match.

Second Place was secured by Clive Williams [ Midland A.S. ] from a peg on the Narrows fishing single & double maggot over groundbait Clive took mainly Roach & Perch, however he did snare one the canals elusive Tench which went 4 lbs along with a bonus Perch to weigh 14 lbs - 8 ozs.

Third place went to Match Organiser Gary Smith [ Midland A.S. ] on the coldest peg on the length, directly above the County Road Bridge fishing Maggot he caught all match taking Roach & Perch to weigh in 8 lbs 11 ozs.

1) Stu Mcllellan Notts Castle AC  17.2.0                                                                                                              2)Clive Williams Midland  14.8.                                                                                                                          3) Gary Smith, Midland 8-11-0                                                                                                                           4] Chris Shaw Midland A.S. 7 - 15 - 8.

7] Ian Mac Midland A.S. 6 - 04.

Round Two is Sunday November 18th, with an 8 am Draw at the Navigation Pub, Meadow Lane, all Pools paid out in the Pub after the match.

Tuesday Evening Open 30/7/18

After Monday night's overnight rain the Trent was carrying some extra fresh water for this evening's match. The level was slightly up and the flow was pushing harder than normal but there wasn't any colour to the water. After weeks of low water levels but good catches the 11 anglers that attended had mixed feelings about how the fish would respond. Those that were optomistic were proved right as 6 double figure weights and a lowest weight in excess of 5lb demonstrated.

Winner tonight was Tony Marshall (Shakespeare ) with a net of hemp and maggot caught dace and roach from peg 19. Tony's weight of 13lb 10oz came on pole at 11m in 3ft of water on a 4x10 rig.

Runner up was Nicky Moss ( Drennan Leicester ) fishing from peg 8. Nicky caught mainly dace to 6oz on maggot over balled in groundbait and was kept busy all evening with a bite every cast to finish agonisingly short with 13lb 2oz.

3rd place went to Simon Heaton  (matchman supplies ) fishing from peg 15. Simon had a net of quality dace and roach but also included a huge perch of 3lb in his 12lb 6oz weight.

4th placed Jim Clayton ( Matchman supplies ) fished pole and maggot over groundbait from peg 20 for a total weight of 11lb 8oz.

The secret pairs prize was claimed by Jim Clayton and Tony Marshall with a combined weight of 25lb 2oz from Nicky Moss and Dave Clayton on 24lb 5oz.

As a consequence of the venue fishing so well the anglers that attended tonight all wanted to include one final match so there will be another match next Tuesday and once again it will be held at Clifton Bridge. Draw 5pm under the bridge.

Tuesday evening open 23/7/18

The 13 anglers that turned up for this evening's match were treated to a beautiful evening of tranquil winds and dropping temperatures that was a relief from the present heatwave conditions so the omens looked very good for an excellent match. It was also the final round of the Notts Fed/ Matchman supplies evening league and while the outright winner wasn't in any serious trouble, once again the runners up spot was a possibility for any one of 5 anglers. Any slip ups could prove to be costly.

For the first time there was a tie for the winners spot on the night between Simon Heaton and Anthony White (both matchman supplies ) with a weight of 8lb 14oz but both had very different nets caught on completely different methods. Simon had a nice net of hemp roach at 11m from peg 4 while Anthony had a net of perch from peg 37 on flat float and chopped worm at 9m.

3rd place fell to another hemp caught roach net of 8lb 10oz for Drennan Leicester rod, Wayne Truman. Wayne fished at 13m from peg 2 and included some really nice roach up to 12oz.

In 4th place was Jim Clayton ( Matchman supplies ) who fished pole and maggot over groundbait at 11m from peg 17 for a final tally of 8lb 8oz of mainly roach and dace.

League wise, Tony Marshall once again emerged victorious with a superb series winning weight of 43lb 3oz. Tony's best weight of 19lb+ did the damage from round 1 at Clifton Bridge and Powergen waters and was always going to put him in the driving seat but 2nd was altogether far from certain.

In the event and despite his best efforts on the night matchman supplies rod, Simon Heaton fell just short of his team mate Billy Bywater. Billy ended up with a series total of 36lb 15oz to Simon 's 36lb 6oz. Billy endured a tough night and failed to improve his weight total while Simon was left ruing several lost roach that cost him the outright win and runners up in the league.

Next week will be at Clifton Bridge and Powergen waters for the secret pairs match. There is no need to find a partner for the match as the pairs are drawn from the hat. Draw at Clifton Bridge at 5pm

Clifton and powergen Sunday 22/7/18

Today’s match was the last of the individual matches on A and B sections in the individual and team national in August

I would like to thank every angler that has attended these matches it’s been very easy to run these matches as everyone as been complementary on the running and organising and helpful doing weigh ins and helping the OAPS that drew long walks I’m mentioning no names here lol

On to the match and everyone wanting powergen or high numbers on Clifton again it’s been another hot sticky day
During the match everyone saying getting bites and everyone had fish which is always a good sign at the weigh in

On to the results

1st tom noton (browning hot rods) peg 3 powergen. 21lb 9oz
Tom drew next to his dad golden generation )who was on peg 4 tom on arriving at his peg set up his pole and waggler and his feeder rod at the all in he balled his pole line with 8 big balls of groundbait and loose fed hemp over top in case feeder dried up tom had a dace first chuck of his groundbait feeder and never looked back as the fish kept coming to him alternating his hookbaits to keep the fish interested he also had pike have a few fish

2nd Gary Smith ( Leicester Drennan) 16lb 0oz Clifton peg 6
Gary started on feeder catching odd dace his twin (nick moaning moss ) came sat behind and he changed to pole at 13 meters feeding hemp and hemp as hookbait and started to catch better stamp fish including some quality roach Gary kept altering depth to keep fish interested

3rd Andy (the worm) Starkey (derby fed ) 14lb 14 oz Clifton peg 12
Andy caught on 8 meter whip which surprised everyone and he caught steadily all match on various hookbaits and feeding caster hemp

4th Jamie Tarplee 14lb 7oz powergen peg 1
Jamie started on groundbait feeder but soon swapped to pole and started to catch perch and eels on maggot at 5 meters alternating between 5 meters and 13 meters with a flat float at the longer distance he carried on catching perch on worm with the odd dace

Tuesday evening open,17/7/18

Clifton bridge and Powergen waters were in fine firm for tonight's evening match despite the nagging downstream breeze that made life awkward for the 15 participants.

With the match split between the 2 sections it was difficult to predict where the best weights were going to come from. In the end, the top 4 were split evenly between the 2 although 5th 6th and 7th came from the top end.

Leading the way was man in form, Billy Bywater ( matchman supplies ) from powergen peg 7. Billy hit his peg hard with 10 big balls of groundbait at 13m and fed another 3 pints of bronze maggots to take a nice net of mainly dace to the scales for a weight of 12lb 15oz.

Runner up , Tony Marshall  (Shakespeare ) drew peg 6 above the bridge and employed pole at 14.5m with maggot and hemp fished on a top 6. Tony had a lovely net of dace and roach that pulled the scales round to 9lb 8oz.

3rd place went to Owen Matthews  (matchman supplies ) who was more than pleased to pull current "hot" peg 1 on powergen. His net of 9lb 2oz comprised of some very big roach caught at 9m on pole and tares.

A Trent legend, Keith Hobson ( Drennan Barnsley Blacks) was happy to drive back to Yorkshire with the 4th place prize tucked into his back pocket after weighing 8lb 9oz of stick float caught dace from peg 16.

Overall, of the 15 participants only 3 weights were under 5lb which, in the tricky wind, made for an outstanding match for all.

In the league,  Tony Marshall will take some stopping after yet another fine performance but Billy Bywater is hot on his heels. So with all to play for the next week's event at the viaducts ought to be a tight affair with several others vying for a place too.

River Trent viaducts open 14th July

MATCH RECORD SMASHED TWICE

Today’s match seen 1st two Angler’s smash the viaducts match record that has stood since the 80s
The record was 50 lbs os both Mark and daz smashed it with daz doubling it today
So well done daz you now are holder of match recon viaducts
As well as moaning daz your bored with catching bream lol

42 anglers turned up for today’s match on Radcliffe viaducts using pegs that that will be used in the div 1 and individual national on these sections
At the draw word was do I want high 40s or low numbers 1to 10 and will roach show yet on what was a clear low river and a very hot day in store
As the match proceeded word was that there was few bream being hooked in various pegs up down the river and the was lots of people getting bites but of dace and odd roach
Then word came round that someone had 37 bream above viaduct but proof would be at weigh in
And so to end of five hour match in very warm muggy conditions at the weigh in we had daz Smith (Maver north west/ spotted fin ) with 100lb 2oz of peg 49 daz started on pole catching small fish so after a hour he switched to groundbait feeder with worm caster fishing 3 quarters way across the river and started catching skimmers and bream till last hour after a tangle which cost him few more lbs of fish

2nd was Mark halksworth golden generation(dh angling) and after getting oxygen on bank side due to long walk (lol) mark drew peg 50 and again Mark start on pole catching small fish but a switch to groundbait feeder 3 quarters way across river with worm caster cocktail on hook started him getting a bite a chuck with odd quiet spell mark ended up with 86lb 12oz

In third was Boydan (I’ve still got your scales) Maver North West /spotted fin with 28lb 1oz of peg again Boydan started on pole but soon switched to groundbait feeder again 3 quarters ways across using worm on hook

In 4 th place was Micheal Denton ( Drennan Oxford) of peg 2 who on last viaduct match drew peg 3 so he know roughly what his plan of attack would be he cupped in 8 balls of groundbait chopped worm caster at 13 meters and started on feeder for 1st hour and didn’t have a bite so switch to pole and had 3 bream in next half hour after this slowed he switched feeder to get 3 more bream and few perch to end with 27lb 10oz

In 5th place was r Jackson (Maver North West /spotted fin )
Of peg 47 again he started on pole and switched to feeder with worm to amass 25lb 8oz

I’d just like to say thanks to everyone attending this match and the help and support for running them

Also special thanks to Paul Warwick who cut nettles and reg pegged above viaducts for me yesterday

Tuesday Evening Open at Viaducts 10/7/18

After last week's reduced attendance this week's evening match at the viaducts saw numbers bounce back and the 16 that fished found the river in a tricky mood. Despite this plenty of fish were caught and that made for a tight match.

1st place went to Wayne Truman ( Drennan Leicester ) from peg 20 with a net made up of chopped worm perch to 1.5lb  and tare roach up to 10oz. Wayne found his peg unresponsive for an hour but persevered with his approach of 2 lines at 6 and 14m. Things improved as the evening went on and at the final whistle his peg was solid and he ended up catching roach 3ft deep in 11ft of water on tares. His winning weight of 9lb 12oz fell just short of the 10lb barrier which meant this is the first evening match since 2016 that hasn't had a 10lb + winner.

Runner up was Dave Limbert  (matchman supplies ) who had a big bream of nearly 6lb along with some small fish weighing 7lb 8oz from peg 39. Dave had his fish on caster and stick float.

In 3rd place was last week's winner, Billy Bywater  (matchman supplies )  who worked peg 33 hard to take a nice net of small fish to the scales to record a weight of 7lb 2oz. Billy caught on both pole and stick with maggot hookbait.

Coming in at 4th place was Rob Casterton  (Drennan Leicester ) fishing peg 42. Rob fished chopped worm on a flat float at 13m to amass a net of perch to 2lb for a final tally of 6lb 12oz

There were 6 other weights in excess of 5lb which made for a tight and exciting match that could have seen any one of several anglers make the prize list.

Next week's match is at Clifton Bridge. To book on call Matchman Supplies on 0115 9813834 or text 07954 563182

Tuesday Evening Open at Powergen and Clifton. 3/7/18

Attendance was down this Tuesday evening but that came as no real surprise with England playing in the world cup at the same time. The 8 anglers that did turn up were treated to a good match that turned up yet more double figure weights on a variety of methods. Breaking the Tony Marshall monopoly of wins on the venue was matchman supplies Billy Bywater. Billy had a net of quality roach and dace on stick and pole from peg 16 above the bridge on maggot hookbait.  Billy had roach to 12oz and dace to 6oz in his winning net that pulled the scales round to 11lb 8oz for the win.

In runners up spot was Simon Heaton also under the matchman supplies banner with a quality net of roach on tares from peg 1 on powergen.  Simon fished 11m pole and short waggler to amass his weight but was left cursing a marauding pike that he blamed for falling just short.

You can't keep this man out of the results when it comes to fishing at Clifton so it came as no surprise that Tony Marshall  ( Shakespeare )  took 3rd place with a mixed net of dace,  roach and perch from peg 11 on powergen that weighed 7lb 8oz.

In 4th place was Anthony white with a lovely net of dace on waggler from peg 14 above the bridge on maggot that went 7lb 3oz.

Back to the viaducts for next week's event. To book in call Matchman Supplies on 0115 9813834

Open Clifton and Powergen 1/7/18.

33 anglers turned up for the 1st open on section A of division one national on powergen and Clifton on upon arriving at the river anglers were greeted with low clear river and temperatures expected to be a high of 28 the good part of this stretch of river is the ability to park behind your peg which gives you more time to set up and get ready
As the match was progressing the talk going around was that everyone was getting bites but hard to hit fish and odd person losing big fish during match as the match ended and results were confirmed it turned out that four of top 5 were golden oldies with average age of 64
In 1st place was Trent legend terry Moroz ( unattached ) peg 9 powergen with 12lb 10.5 oz which he caught on feeder with maggot on hook catching dace and then hooked a bream to boost his weight after swapping to worm on hook he hooked his twin to finish winning match
In 2nd place was terrys travelling partner another golden oldie mark halksworth (DH Angling )with a weight of 11lb 15.5 oz of peg 16 Clifton which he roughly half his weight on groundbait feeder with maggot caster on hook and after switching to stick float caught dace on maggot all marks fish were dace
In 3rd place another of the golden generation John Harper (lifestyle)John was on peg 14 powergen he caught on various methods pole/stick /waggler mainly dace with odd perch and roach
In 4th was another pensioner Gary pilsworth (Notts aa) Gary drew peg 18 Clifton and weighed in with 8lb 10oz Gary started on feeder and only had 4 fish in 1st hour as with to pole he started catching roach on hemp steadily till it died and onLy had 3 fish in last hour In 5th was Mark Wilton (Wellingborough) of peg 3 powergen

Tuesday Open 26/6/2018

The outstanding turnout of 19 anglers for the latest evening match were

treated to some glorious weather but the river at the viaducts section was a bit below par. In a tough match for most, Drennan Team England regular,  Steve Hemmingray,  led the way with a chopped worm approach at 9m on a flat float from peg 31. Steve had a net of perch including one specimen of 3lb to amass a winning weight of 10lb 2oz.

The runners up spot went to Nicky Moss ( Drennan Leicester ) who also fished pole with a flat float over balled in groundbait at 13m.  Nicky had an entertaining evening catching 2 bream up to 3lb with some silvers topping them off on waggler to record a weight of 9lb 7oz from peg 39.

3rd place was claimed by Rob Perkins (Dynamite ) with a nice net of roach and dace on pole and stick float with maggot hookbait from peg 18 going 6lb 10oz.

In 4th place was Clive Fletcher (Matchman supplies ) with a net of mainly comprised of "pommies" caught on pole and stick from peg 13.

Despite the prospect of England playing in the World Cup next Tuesday the regulars all voted to keep the match on the same night so next week's match at Clifton will go ahead as planned.  Seems that the prospect of a heaving net full of the best that the Trent can offer is more of a draw than watching the England football team!

We was meet with warm sunny day and everyone looking forward to seeing what this fantastic venue had to offer them

Tuesday Open 19/6/18

There was a concern over how the river would respond to such a long and bitterly cold winter despite the glorious weather enjoyed in the last 7 weeks or so. But worries were soon put aside by the 13 anglers that attended the first Notts Fed/ Matchman supplies evening match of 2018 at Clifton Bridge and Powergen waters .

Picking up from where he left off was Tony Marshall (Shakespeare) who has now won 4 of his last 5 matches on the venue with a superb performance comprising of 3 big bream backed up with some big perch. Tony's weight of 19lb 6oz went very close to the evening match record held by Rob Perkins set 8 years ago of 21lb 4oz. Tony was drawn on peg 1 on powergen and fished chopped worm on a flat float at 14m to secure the win and walked away £66 richer.

Runner up was Team England regular Steve Hemmingray (Drennan )  who drew end peg 13 on powergen and fished pole at 13m over balled in groundbait for a quality net of dace and roach going 18lb 4oz.

3rd place fell to evening match regular Jim Clayton (Matchman supplies ) with a net of dace and roach also on pole and maggot over groundbait from peg 11 on powergen going 12lb 2oz.

4th place went to Drennan Leicester skipper,  Nicky Moss, with a 3lb bream a 1.5lb skimmer and some quality roach from peg 9 powergen also on pole and maggot that took the scales to 11lb 10oz

Breaking the powergen monopoly on the big weights was Simon Heaton  ( matchman supplies ) who took a net of quality dace that went 11lb 4oz on whip and stick float with maggot hook bait  from peg 16 above the bridge.

Next Tuesday's match will be on the Viaducts section.  To book in call Matchman Supplies on 0115 9813834.

Please find the results to Round six of the Nottingham Federation Marukyu Winter League, which was postponed last Sunday due to the weather, of late the canal has been suffering from the cold weather that we have been subject to and the Snow and salt water entering it from the roads. Yesterdays match was fished in better conditions but the water was very cold and carried little colour, the results or though not great showed that the fish are starting to move around once more.

The winner on the day was Ian Mac, who drew in the Narrows at the top of London Road, fishing bread punch at 10 mtrs catching Roach, later on his short line fishing caster & maggot taking Perch, alternating between the two lines he put a weight of 4lbs - 11 ozs together.

Second place went to John Simpson who drew a peg just below Cowies Bridge on the Tins section fishing Pinkie and chopped worm baits he put together a weight of 2 lbs – 3ozs – 8drms, John also lost a duel with a big Perch.

Third place was taken by Match Organiser Gary Smith from the Willows section, fishing bread punch took a net of small Roach to finish up with a weight of 1 lb – 11 ozs , just edging out Simon Harper at the next peg.

We would like to thank all the Anglers who took part in this years Winter League and we hope to see you back again next season, a special thank you to Gary Smith Match Organiser for his hard work this series which due the bad weather which created the problem of having to call two matches off and rearrange them at later dates.

Please find below the results to todays Nottingham Federation Marukyu Winter League Round Five fished on the London Road Match Length of the Nottingham canal.

Unfortunately for the  twenty strong field of anglers the canal was in a very mean mood it has not recovered well from the the cold weather which has been gripping the country since before Xmas, whilst giving the appearance of having a tinge of colour in it your bait could be seen descending to at least two feet when dropped in down the side, add this to the salt water that has run into it from the Gritting of the Cities Roads and it is a recipe for a hard match for all the field.

Taking the honours on the day was Richard Turner who drew a peg which seldom produces a weight to win a match on the Narrows at the top of London Road, fishing Bread Punch at 13 metres Richard put together a weight of 2 lbs - 4 ozs - 8 drms of small Roach on Bread Punch.

Second place was taken by Match Organiser Gary Smith pegged a couple of pegs away from Richard once again fishing Punch taking small Roach for a weight of 1 lb - 12 ozs.

Third place went Pete Tomlinson who also fished Punch from a peg on the Willows taking small Roach weighing 15 ozs. to the scales.

This latest round of the League has fished really hard, never in recent history have we had a match with such low weights taken, hopefully we have an increase in the temperatures before the final match of this years series on Sunday March 18th, which will be fished on the London Road Match Length with an 8 am Draw at the Navigation Pub, if you are unable to fish please contact Match Organiser Gary Smith  to inform on 0115 9875852 please.

Nottingham Federation Senior Citizens Match Wednesday August 2nd Four Islands Lake at Portland Fishery.

Twenty Four Fed Veterans fished the match today conditions were far from ideal with a blustery wind blowing all day, fortunately the rain managed to limit itself to showery out bursts. The fish decided that they were going to play hard to catch also with odd fish turning up in most of the pegs through the match but on the day most managed to put a few fish together, with once again the Inner pegs being the ones to draw.

Pete Tomlinson [ Midland A.S.] drew peg 19, a favoured peg and after a frustrating couple of hours started to catch on banded pellet taking the honors with 107 lbs - 03 ozs.

Second place went to Derek Brough [Notts Castle A.C.] who caught steadily all day from peg 18 on meat down the track to finish with 83 lbs - 10 ozs.

Third place was taken by John Rick [ Midland A.S.] at peg 20 once again after a barren 2 hours started to catch steadily close in on meat to finish with 56 lbs - 06.

Fourth place went to Dave Hillyard [ Power Gen A.C.] peg 28 weighing in 52 lbs - 06 ozs.

Fifth place went to Garry Smith [Midland A.S.] peg 29 weighing in 51 lbs - 03 ozs.

Sixth place Roy Toulson [ Notts Fed.] peg 12 weighing in 46 lbs - 06 ozs.

We would like to thank all those who turned out to fish the match today and special thanks to Dynamite Baits who sponsored the Match for their Bait Products gifts to all the Anglers.

Tuesday evening open,2/8/17

"The best ever Summer series!" that was the overwhelming response at the bar after the 2017 Summer Evening series of matches drew to a close tonight and it's hard to argue against that statement. Every match except the first round yielded multiple double figure weights. Saying that, the first match still came very close with a winning weight of 9lb 13oz and tonight's match continued the exceptional set of returns on the Trent at the Viaducts. Bearing in mind these are 3 hour events, over the 7 match series there have been 23 weights over 10lb and an AVERAGE weight per angler of 7lb 10oz. The results speak for themselves and go a long way towards cementing the middle Trent amongst the very best river sport to be found anywhere in the country at present.

Tonight's winner was Jim Clayton (Matchman Supplies) fishing from peg 2. Jim found the fish eager to feed over his "balled in" groundbait and maggot tactics at 8m. The steady stream of roach and dace on a 3 gram rig was interrupted by a bream of 4lb boosting his weight up to 10lb 10oz and resulted in a brown envelope containing £60 and a big bar bill!

Close runner up was Anthony White (Midland) who had a lovely net of mainly roach on maggot up to 10oz from peg 11 going 10lb 6oz. Anthony caught on pole at 11m utilising a 2 gram rig over "balled" groundbait then switched to stick float after the fish backed off down his peg.

3rd place went to the irrepressible Tony Marshall (Shakespeare) who caught on pole and hemp from peg 12. His net of roach went 6lb 12oz meaning Tony only had a minor bar bill.

4th place and unlucky first out of the prizes went to Dave Limbert (Matchman Supplies) with a stickfloat and maggot derived net of roach and dace going 6lb

10oz.

The organiser would like to thank all the participants this year without whom the series wouldn't be possible. We all hope that this year is only a precursor to even better things in the future, but if not, we will reflect on 2017 as a vintage year and hope that 2018 equals or surpasses this one.

Tuesday Evening July 25th Open Match Result.

The Matchman Supplies Trent Summer League came to an outstanding climax tonight, on the Trent at Clifton and Power Gen Waters. Going into the match Tony Jennifer Marshall
[ Shakespeare ]was clear leader and although Tony was in a pretty unassailable position, runner up was by no means clear. Going into the match Dave Clayton [ Drennan Leicester ] held a slight advantage over Simon Heaton [ Matchman Supplies] so it was all to play for.

Tony Marshall once again won the match with a superb performance catching Dace to 6oz with some Roach on Hemp at 13 m from peg 8 on Clifton to register another comfortable victory with 16lbs 9oz. Tony was bitted out on Maggot so fed Hempsteadily and after switching to seed the Dace kept coming enabling Tony to register his perfect record on Cliftonof 3 wins out of 3 matches and he walked away £70 richer for the match win and a further £65 from the League win plus £25 tackle voucher donated by Tim Aplin, redeemable at Matchman Supplies. For the record Tony amassed a combined weight over his best 4 matches out of 6 of 58 lbs 15 ozs, meaning he was a mere 18 lbs plus ahead of second place.

Runner up on the night was Clive Fletcher [ Matchman Supplies ] who had a mixed net of Roach, Dace and Perch from peg 6 on Powergen on stick float and maggot. Clive found the fish eager to feed in the slightly slacker water behind the big boil in the peg due to the 5" of extra water on the river after recent rains and his weight of 11lbs 7oz meant he went away £60 better off.

Third place and League runner up went to Simon Heaton Matchman Supplies ] from peg 7 on Powergen with a net of Roach on Hemp going 8 lbs 13 oz. Simon had a frustating night as his peg was solid with Roach but lost many to maurading Pike that meant he was left feeling he ought to have pushed Tony for the outright win on the night. However 3rd place and £50 plus a further £45 and a 310 tackle voucher went a long way to making him feel better. His combined weight of 40lbs 7oz was just enough to see off Dave Clayton [ Drennan Leicester ] who couldn't improve his toatal on the night and ended the League with 40 lbs 1 oz.

Fourth place went to Wayne Truman [ Drennan Leicester ] from Clifton peg 11 with a weight of 7 lbs 15 oz of Dace and Roach but lost two big fish which he thought were Barbel on stick float and whip with maggot hookbait.

Overall the venue fished very well if a little patchy due to the extra water, saying that, the lowest weight was still over 4 lbs.

The Summer League is now over but there will still be another Match next week at the Viaducts Section with a 5 pm Draw. To book in please contact Matchman Supplies on 0115 9813834.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Tim Aplin the Proprietor of Matchman Supplies for his continued Sponsorship of the Tuesday Evening Summer League, it is much appreciated by the Federation. Tuesday Evening July 18th Open Match Result.

This weeks Match was fished on Radcliffe Viaducts the 11 Anglers who fished on the night with a strong upstream wind or in your face, which as Trent regulars will appreciate , makes for testing conditions with a swell on the water that is unusual. As a consequence the returns didn't quite match the outstanding results of the previous weeks but nevertheless, were still very good.

First place was taken by Dave Clayton [Drennan Leicester] from peg 18 who "Balled" the Waggler line and caught very well for the first hour whilst priming up a Hemp line at 11 metres for later. The switch worked very well and a good stamp of Roach fell to the seed for the following 2 hours to give him a lovely net of Roach with the odd Perch from the Waggler to weigh 12lbs 5oz and a comfortable win.

Second place went to Nicky Moss D[rennan Leicester] who drew peg 40 and amassed a net of small fish mainly Roach and Dace on 13 metre pole with maggot over groundbait weighing in 10lbs 3oz.

Third place was taken by Wayne Trueman [Drennan Leicester] who weighed a level 7lbs of Roach, Dace and Perch from peg 34. Wayne had areally enjoable night catching on Maggot and Bolo Tactics at around 20 metres.

Completing the Drennan Leicester shut out was Match Organiser Neil Pitfield. Neil had a steady night catching small fish all evening on maggot and 13 metre pole over groundbait eventually taking 5lbs 14oz to the scales.

Overall a good evenings fishing despite the conditions as there were a further three 5lbs plus weights on a variety of tactics.

The Matchman Supplies Summer League is looking very interesting, Tony Marshall is still well ahead, but with his winning weight tonight Dave Clayton is consoldidating second position.. All very tight with one match to go.

This weeks match fished at Clifton Bridge & Powegen Waters was once again produced another Bonaza set of weights for the 12 Anglers who braved the change of weather to fish, not only did they have to brave the weather but once again the canoeists did their best to ruin another Evening Match on the Federation Water at Clifton. I have already taken issue with the Canal & River Trust over the Canoeists Blatent Bloody Minded Approach to any water users bar themselves, but all Anglers who fish our Waters can rest assured that the Federation are not sitting back and allowing them to ruin our Sport we will continue to fight our corner on behalf of all Anglers fishing our Waters.

Match Organiser Neil Pitfield suggest that the Trent in Summer conditions is once again right up there with the very best river sport to be had anywhere in the Country, he was talking with a well known Yorkshire Angler at Clifton Sunday who remarked, " How much better does this River have to fish before match attendances hit the sellout point ?" That is a question that Neil told me he has also pondered, last nights Match was no exception.

Tony Marshall Shakespeare took the Honours from Peg 6 Clifton fishing Pole at 11 metres over groundbait and Caster taking 18lb 3oz to the scales including a bonus 2.5lb Ide. Tony is leading the Matchman Supplies Summer League with 48 lbs from 4 matches averaging 12 lbs per match not bad going for a total of 12 hours fishing.

Runner Up was Nicky Moss Drennan Leicester from Peg 3 Powergen with 13lb 7oz of mainly Roach on a 3g rig and maggot over groundbait. Nicky remarked on how he caught 15 Roach at 4ozs apiece in 15 casts and summed it by saying, "This is PROPER Fishing!"

Third place went to Anthony White Midland A.S. with a net of Dace to 6oz from peg 4 at Clifton on Waggler and maggot, weighing in 10lbs 6oz.

Fouth place went to Clive Fletcher Matchman Supplies fishing peg 8 at Clifton with 10ibs 5oz of Dace also taken on Waggler and maggot.

Firthpalce went to Dave Clayton Drennan Leicester who also had an all Dace Net weighing 9lbs 10oz taken on 8 metre whip on maggot over groundbait from peg20 at Clifton.

Last place on the match weighed 4lbs 14oz which just demonstrates how brilliantly the Trent is currently fishing this year.

The 15 anglers that attended tonight's Tuesday evening open were treated to yet another bonanza on the River Trent at the Viaducts section that is yielding some truly remarkable sport. The top 5 all having 10lb + and 6lb only good enough to make the bottom 4! The prolongued mild Spring weather and low water conditions have seen the fish feeding ravenously and the anglers enjoying this bumper spell.

Tonight's winner was Anthony Fyson (Notts AA) who included a 10lb 2oz barbel in his weight of 19lb 3oz.. Anthony fished stick float and maggot from peg 10 taking roach and dace as well as his bonus barbel. Anthony lost one early and then geared up ready for any more and was duly rewarded netting his barbel after a tense 30 min battle to take the winning purse of £70 and a match win in only his second ever match!

Second place went to Trent stalwart, Simon Heaton, (Matchman Supplies) who took a fantastic net of roach up to 1lb from peg 18 on tare and pole tactics. Simon had his best roach first put in and went on to catch steady all evening taking his 11lb 6oz to the scales and pocketed £55.

3rd place went to Drennan Leicester skipper, Nicky Moss, who had a bream of 2lb and a net of quality fish for 10lb 11oz from peg 33 on maggot and pole with some stick float fish later in the evening just pushing his weight up enough to claim the £40 prize.

4th place went to Rob Chesterton (Measham) who had a net of roach and dace all caught on pole with  maggot hookbait over groundbait from peg 39. Rob had a very busy evening as his best fish was only 3oz but still managed to amass a very respectable 10lb 10oz and took the last prize of £30

5th place went to Tony Marshall (Shakespeare) who had a quality net of roach from peg 5 on hemp to weigh 10lb 2oz.

A fantastic evening's fishing for everyone involved which only bodes well for this Saturday's first open of the season on this water.

Next week's evening match will be at Clifton/Powergen.. To book in call Matchman Supplies on 0115 813834

Federation Winter League 26/3/17. Final Round

The canal returned to something like its very best form, the weights of fish caught will indicate why this canal must be the best inner city canal for fishing in the country, certainly in the Midlands. Whilst not all the field made double figures which were needed even for a section win I don’t think any angler left disappointed by the the fish he caught on the day.

First on the day from a peg on the Narrows Section was Match Organiser Gary Smith, who took a mixed net of fish to the scales all taken on Maggot for 23 lbs – 11 ozs, In Second place was Mr Canal Clive Williams fishing Caster from just below the Willows Bridge taking a mixed bag to the scales weighing 16 lbs – 9 ozs. Third place was taken by Chris Shaw drawn just up stream of Meadow Lane Hump Back Bridge fishing Bread Punch and Caster baits weighing in 16 lbs – 00 ozs of Roach and Skimmers. The canal produced a great days fishing for all the field the back up weights would have done many canals proud on another day.

WINTER LEAGUE ROUND 5

Round five of the Federation Winter League was fished on Sunday February 19th, we moved the pegs about a little in view of the disappointing results witnessed in the previous match, the canal had been on the Tow Path leading up to the match with little flow taking place strange conditions really the colour of the water pointed to the fact that it was carrying a lot of snowy salty water from the recent bad weather we witnessed in the Derbyshire Peaks.

First on the day was the Clive Williams a canal wizard and good at the Draw Bag to boot, he took a mixed net to the scales weighing 11lbs – 10ozs taken on mainly Punch and Caster baits from the upstream end pegs. Second place fell to Dave Hillyard with a mixed bag weighing 7lbs – 11ozs taken on Punch & Maggot. Lou Nightingale came in third place with a mixed net weighing 6lbs – 5ozs taken on Maggot & Pinkies. The fourth round of the League was fished on a the canal yesterday Sunday February 5th, the Canal was pulling hard on the day and was carrying salt water from all the Grit being spread on the roads due to the recent frosty conditions, whilst there were no blanks in a strong field weights were very much down from the last round before Xmas, with most of the field struggling to catch fish in any numbers. The top three weights on the day came from the noted pegs on the length that always tend to hold fish.
First on the day from a peg on the Willow section was Mick Edge who took 6 lbs 7 ozs to the scales of small Roach, taken on bread punch fishing at the bottom of he far shelf taking in total 140 fish in total. Second place was taken by Rob Sherriff also fishing punch from a peg just below the Road Bridge on the Tins stretch weighing 2 lbs 14 ozs of Roach. Winter League Round 3.

Yesterday saw Round Three of the Nottingham Federation Winter League fished on the London Road Length of the Nottingham Canal, despite a big drop in the water temperature due in part to the heavy rain fall on Saturday the venue still managed to produce some very good weights with most of them being made up with Roach taken on a variety of baits.

First on the day was the evergreen Clive Williams who drew well once again with a peg just above the Hump Back Bridge at Meadow Lane, taking a fine net of mainly Roach on Punch and Caster to finish with 11 lbs  11ozs. Second place went to Richard Turner drawn in the Bay above the County Road Bridge, fishing Pinkie and Maggot over Ground Bait taking an all Roach net to the scales for 11 lbs  2 ozs. In third place from the peg above Turner, Chris Shaw made it a Midland A.S. top three taking a fine net of Roach caught on Caster weighing in 9 lbs 1 1/2 ozs. There were no dry nets with most of the field taking between 4 and 5 Lbs of fish, the canal is still fishing really well so with the Xmas holiday period approaching there is some cracking sport to be had for the price of Day Ticket which is great value at just £4-00.

Winter League Round 2

Despite a change in the weather conditions for the worst with heavy overnight rain and a severe drop in the air and water temperatures aided by a strong North Easterly Wind the canal still managed to produce some decent weights for the conditions on the day for Round Two of the Federation Winter League.

For the second match of the series Richard Turner had the golden hand in the draw bag drawing in a favoured area two pegs away from his last draw in the first round, once again his favourite method of fishing Pinkies over Ground Bait produced the Fish on the day taking a net of mainly small Roach to the scales to finish with 7 lbs 15 ozs. In second place from a peg just beneath the County Road Bridge Pete Tomlinson fishing Pinkie & Maggot Hook Baits took a catch of Roach & Skimmers to the scales weighing 6 lbs 6 ozs. Clive Williams secured third place with another all Roach catch from a peg at the top of the Bay weighing in 6 lbs 3 ozs. Yet again in horrible conditions the Canal produced some excellent returns with no dry nets on the day.

Winter League round 1 Result fished 6/11/16

Sunday November 6th saw the first round of the Federation Canal Winter League fore this season a strong field of anglers booked into this years series and once again the canal proved what a great stretch of water it is, despite a drop in temperatures and a strong Northerly wind blowing down stream, with the colour dropping out despite the unusually heavy boat traffic on the day the weights would have graced many a match. At the price of a £4-00 Day Ticket it has to be worth visiting if its Roach & Skimmer fishing you get your angling fix from but beware of the Traffic Wardens during the working week, do your parking space homework before visiting.

First on the day from a peg below the Willows Bridge on the Tins was Richard Turner who fished Maggot & Pinkie over ground bait for a mixed net of Roach & Skimmers weighing 19 lbs –14 ozs. In second place from the same area was Mick Edge with 9 lbs – 2 ozs of caster caught Roach & Skimmers. Third place was taken by Pete Tomlinson drawn in the Bay above the County Road Bridge with a mixed net of Roach & Skimmers plus a bonus Perch weighing 7 lbs – 13 ozs taken on maggot. Winter League Round 6.

The last round of the Federation Winter League was fished on the London Road Match Length of the Nottingham Canal on Sunday March 20th, the conditions were excellent with the canal carrying a good colour, the water temperature though still suffering from the cold snap of recent days. On the day the Master of the Canal Clive Williams once again drew a sought after peg on the Tins and fishing caster took a fine net of Roach to the scales weighing 15 lbs  04 ozs. In second place from the next peg peg was Richard Turner who weighed 9 lbs 14 ozs of Roach & Skimmers taken on maggot fishing a Lollipop Float. Third place was taken by match organiser Garry Smith from a favoured peg just above the Meadow Lane Hump Back Bridge 7 lbs 11 ozs of Roach & Dace taken on caster & maggot baits. Once again there were no dry nets and all though the top four weights were well exceptional on the day the back up weights ensured that it remained a competitive match through out for the section prizes and points for the final League placing's.

Although Clive Williams had already won the League after match 5, his win today  cemented the result for him.

Winter league Round 5

Sunday  February 21st saw Round 5 of the Federation Winter League on the London Road length of the canal, the strong gusting wind made presentation of baits almost impossible at times, once again the those who were lucky enough to draw the areas where the fish are shoaled up reaped the rewards. With one match still to fish Clive Williams has won the league with another great performance from a sought after peg, taking 11 lbs 10 ozs of Roach caught on Caster & Hemp baits from a peg just above the Meadow Lane Humpback Bridge. Second place was taken by match organiser Garry Smith fishing maggot, he took 8 lbs 8 ozs to the scales despite having his pole blow in. Richard Turner took third place with a mixed net of fish on Pinkies weighing 6 lbs 9ozs . Once again there were no dry nets. The last match sees plenty of opportunity for the top ten to fish for second and third places.

Winter League Round 4 (Fished 7/2/2016.

Sunday February 7th was round four of the Federation Winter League fished on the London Road length of the Nottingham canal, the conditions were far from ideal with a strong upstream wind gusting at times severely, with the fish being shoaled up in pockets a good draw was essential on the day.

Mick Edge took the honours on the day weighing in a mixed net of small Skimmers, Roach and Dace for 5 lbs 10 ozs on maggot hook bait from a favoured peg just above the Meadow Lane Hump Back Bridge. Second place went to the Evergreen Clive Williams, drawn on the Tins fishing Pinkies and Bread Punch he put together a net of small Roach and Dace, plus one specimen Roach in a fine net of silver fish weighing 5 lbs 51/2 ozs.  Third place went to Dave Hillyard drawn in the peg above the  match winner, fishing Bread Punch weighed 4 lbs 14 ozs taking Roach and Skimmers. There were several mixed nets of nets of 3lbs plus taken on the Tins section of the match and once again there were no dry nets in the strong field of anglers.

Winter League Round 3 (Fished 13/12/2016.

Sunday 13th was the latest round of the Federation Winter League fished on the London Road match length of the canal, despite the drop in temperature and the persistent rain and drizzle once again the venue lived up to its good name with a double figure weight taking the honours and no dry nets, it must be one of if not the best stretch of canal in the east midlands, for those who have not visited it they are not aware of what they have on their doorsteps, Day Tickets available on the Bank from the Bailiff at £4-00, definitely worthy of a visit.

Clive Williams took the honours on the day with a net of mainly Roach up to 10 ozs taken on Hemp, Caster & Maggot taking 12 lbs 15 ozs to the scales from a peg just upstream of the Meadow Lane Humpback Bridge. Stu McLellan took second place fro a favoured peg on the reliable Tins section of the canal, in recent matches the Tins have produced the winning weight but to day had to settle for second and third places. Stu weighed 8 lbs 2 ozs of Caster caught Roach & Dace. Third place went to Chris Shaw who was at the next peg weighing in 7 lbs 11 ozs of Roach & Dace also taken on Caster.

The next match in the series is on Sunday February 7th 2016, with an 8 am Draw at the Navigation Pub, Meadow Lane.

Winter League round 2  (Fished 22/11/2015)

Yesterday was the second round of the Federation Winter League fished on the London Road match length of the Nottingham Beeston canal, as in round one you needed to draw a peg in Section Two to win the match currently the fish are residing in the Bay and the Tins length above the County Road Bridge. Section One from Meadow Lane Hump Bridge to below County Road Bridge whilst holding plenty of small Roach, Perch, Dace & the odd Skimmer does not provide the quality fish showing above the Bridge.

Taking the honours was match organiser Garry Smith from a peg in the middle of the Tins length, fishing maggot & feeding small balls of ground bait he put together a net of Skimmers & Perch weighing 16 lbs  4 ozs. Second place went to club mate Pete Tomlinson drawn in the Bay above the Bridge fishing maggot he caught Roach & Skimmers to weigh in 10 lbs  6 ozs. Third place was taken on the next peg by another club mate Clive Williams fishing caster he put together a net of quality Roach & dace weighing 9 lbs  2 ozs. As a comparison the best weight in Section One below the County Road Bridge was 4 lbs  14 ozs. so the section to draw at present is Section Two.

Next Match Round Three is on December 13th with an 8 am draw at the Navigation Pub, Meadow Lane.

Winter League round 1 (Fished 1/11/2015)

Sunday was the first round of the Federation Winter League and all six matches will be fished on the London Road Match Length of the Nottingham / Beeston Canal. On the day despite the amount of rain that had fallen the canal was carrying very little colour which did not help the cause of an eighteen strong field. Just like last seasons League the area of the canal to draw proved to be the Bay and the Tins length above the County Road Bridge. The length above above the Hump Back Meadow Lane Bridge saw most of the field struggling to put fish in the net on a regular basis, but hopefully as they move down the length as the series progress that will change.

Taking the honours from a favoured peg in the Bay above County Road Bridge was Rob Sherriff weighing in 8lbs – 03ozs of Skimmers & Roach taken mainly on maggot. Second place went to Pete Tomlinson drawn higher up the canal on the Tins stretch weighing in 7lbs – 10 ozs of Skimmers taken on maggot over ground bait. Third place went to Richard Turner with a mixed net net of small Roach, Dace & Perch taken on maggot weighing 7 lbs – 8ozs from  the next peg Tomlinson.

The last match will be a pairs match with the anglers drawn into pairs rather than anglers having to find a partner and decided on a points basis with weight coming into it in the event of a tie. Despite being a pairs match it is still open for those that just want to fish as an individual.

Third Evening Open Result

The glorious weather and bright sunshine did not knock the recent good start to the new seasons Tuesday evening matches on the head, in fact it appears to have encouraged the Roach on the Viaducts to go on a feeding spree which is what this water has been noted for in recent years. The warm weather is forecast to continue for the for see able future, which could the next few weeks could see some cracking Roach catches for all the anglers fishing this water.
Fifteen Anglers ...turned out for last nights Match which is slightly down on the last two matches but still very pleasing for an evening match and augers well for River Matches in general.
Taking the Honours & £85 winners purse was Garry Smith,[Drennan Leicester Sensas] weighing 9lb – 6ozs of Roach & Dace, with Roach to 8 ozs taken on Stick float & maggot 3 rods out from peg 42, he also lost a big Chub at the net.

Viaducts Evening Open Series.   Match One Result.

The first match in this seasons series of eight Tuesday Evening  Open Matches on the Federations Radcliffe Viaducts Fishery took place on the opening evening of the new season last night, after four months of hard work on the water, re siting pegs cutting back trees & bushes, the laying of a new track behind the pegs with a parking bay at each peg, the water was put to the test by a seventeen strong field field for the first match. Neither the anglers who booked in or the match organisers Neil Pitfield, Wayne Swinscoe or  Simon Heaton were disappointed with the result or the turn out for the first match. Which turned out to be a really close top three weights.

Taking the honours after three hours of fishing was Wayne Truman [Matchman Supplies], using Waggler & maggot tactics from peg 42, running his float through to the first buttress of the Viaduct Bridge, he was kept busy all night with plenty of bites, no fish weighing more than 6 ozs, catching Roach & Dace steadily to finish with a net of fish weighing 8 lbs – 9 ozs. & £90 first prize on the night for his efforts.

Second place was taken by Golden Oldie  Colin Walton [Newark Fed.], fishing Stick Float & maggot from peg 10, he finished with a nice net of quality Roach & dace weighing   8lbs -- 7 ozs, he was left ruing many pricked fish that cost him the win.

Third place was taken by Neil Pitfield weighing 7 lbs – 14ozs [Drennan Leicester Sensas], fishing Stick Float & Maggot,he caught two Bream plus some bits from peg 32 but sadly lost two Bream & a Barbel which would have won him the match.

Fourth place was taken by Garry Smith [Drennan Leicester Sensas] weighing 6 lbs 10 ozs, of Roach & Dace taken on Stick Float & Maggot from peg 40.

Fifth place was taken by Wayne Swinscoe [Drennan], weighing 5 lbs – 12 ozs, of Roach, Dace & Perch taken on Stick Float & Maggot from peg 36.

Sixth place went to Jim Clayton [Matchman Supplies], weighing 4 lbs – 15 ozs taken on Waggler fished maggot at peg 20.

Seventeen Anglers fished on a river still carrying 6 inches of extra water after the weekends heavy rain it fished really well, all anglers took fish to the scales the lowest weight recorded was 2 lbs –14 ozs. Every one agreed it was a great start to the series which on the evidence of these results will only get better as the weeks pass.

WINTER LEAGUE ROUND 5.

Well nice to the Sun in the sky after Sunday not ideal fishing conditions by a any stretch of the imagination, but the fifth round of the Fed. Winter League was fished on the London Road Match Length yesterday.

Conditions were not ideal the Canal carrying cold water it had a greyish tinge of colour & once again if you failed to pull out a peg number on the Tins Section you were in for a Grueler, it was no so long ago that the Tins were the Kiss of Death now it is the in place to draw.

Once again Clive Williams the man with the “Golden Hand” took the Honours weighing in 5 lbs – 15 ozs of Skimmers & Roach taken on Caster. Second place went to club mate Chris Shaw fishing Caster taking a net of Roach weighing 4 lbs -- 15 ozs with one Roach weighing in at 1 lb –10 ozs. Third place went to Bob Byrne with a mixed net  of fish once again taken on Caster weighing in at 4 lbs – 07 ozs. Sadly those drawing in Section One below County Road Bridge struggled to catch any quality fish & as a result the League Table has really turned around with some new faces in the top six places.

The final match Round Six will be fished on Sunday march 22nd with an 8 am Draw at the Navigation Pub, Meadow Lane.

WINTER LEAGUE ROUND 4.

Round four of the Winter League was fished on Sunday February 8th on the London Road Match Length & despite a heavy frost & snow & salt water in the canal it fished pretty well overall there were no dry nets. The three top weights came from consecutive pegs on the Tins Section which normally does not throw up winners but on this occasion the fish were shoaled in that area.

Taking the honours was Clive Williams fishing Bread Punch & Caster baits to put together a mixed net of Roach & Dace weighing 10 lb – 13 oz. Second Place was taken by Stu McLellan fishing Caster for 6 lb – 09 oz of mainly Roach. Third place was taken by Pete Tomlinson who fished Bread Punch & Maggot to take a mixed net of Roach & Perch weighing 5 lb – 13 oz.

Once again despite the recent cold spell the Canal produced a really good match for those who turned out on the day & the League is really tight. Next match is Round five with an 8 am draw as usual at the Navigation Pub, Meadow Lane.

WINTER LEAGUE ROUND 3.

Winter League Round Three fished was on London Road & despite the drop in temperature it fish pretty well overall or though as you would have expected the weights were reduced somewhat from the last Round due to the conditions.

In first place we had a tie, both anglers weighing 4  lbs 11ozs, Pete Tomlinson drawn on London Road a few pegs down from the County Road Bridge put together a mainly Roach net taken on maggot. Drawn above the Bridge in the Bay Ian Mac caught a mixed net of Roach & Perch on maggot one Roach weighing a pound.  Third place was taken by the evergreen Bob Bent well into his later years & still giving all a run for their money, he was pegged at the bottom of London Road & once again fishing maggot took 4 lbs 1 oz to the scales which included an Eel weighing 11/2 lbs, once again there were no dry nets.

WINTER LEAGUE ROUND 2.

The second round of the Federation Winter League was fished on the London Road stretch of the Nottm. Beeston canal today, despite the heavy rain which had fallen most of the night the canal fished pretty well through the length of the match with all anglers facing the scales, as the top six weights indicate it was very close match through out the whole field.

On the day Stuart Mcllelan  Victoria Tackle, took the honours, he fished maggot for a mixed net of small Perch, Roach & Dace weighing in 7 lbs dead from a favoured peg just above Meadow Lane Humped Back Bridge. Second place was taken by match organiser Garry Smith Midland Anglers, weighing 6 lbs 11 ozs of Roach & Perch with a bonus Skimmer Bream taken on maggot from a peg on the Tins. Third palace fell to club mate John Rick at the next peg being narrowly beaten by 1 ounce weighing in 6 lbs 10 ozs of caster caught Skimmer Bream & Roach.

The next match in the series is on Sunday December 14th with an 8am draw at the Navigation Pub, Meadow Lane.

2014 senior citizens match result.

Twenty one Federation members fished the match on Four Islands, which was a pleasing turn out for the organisers. A cool breeze helped to keep the temperature down for all the field but the hot weather made fish  hard to come by for most of the field. With the exception of the winning weight it was a very close match, there were a few D.N.W's. but that was down to the fact they chose not to weigh in.

First on the day was Dave Hillyard  (Powergen) from peg 18, weighing 89lbs - 07 ozs, mainly Carp taken on dead maggot, on the day this was more than enough to win the match but the next three places were separated by only 2 pounds. Full result below.  Thanks go to Brian Cross and Mick Lakin for taking time to organised the match.
